New Zealand chooses to bowl first in the opening T20I against West Indies; Jamieson available to play

Toss: New Zealand elects to bowl versus West Indies

Marking a new chapter after Kane Williamson’s retirement, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and decided to bowl first in the first match of the five-game T20I series against West Indies in Auckland.

Following recent home T20I losses to England and Australia, both affected by rain, New Zealand is looking to bounce back but is missing several key players due to injuries, including opener Finn Allen, wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Seifert, and fast bowler Lockie Ferguson.

Seamer Kyle Jamieson, meanwhile, has recovered from a side strain and is fit to play, while Devon Conway has taken on wicketkeeping duties for this match.

After a heavy defeat to Nepal, West Indies responded strongly with a 3-0 series win over Bangladesh and aims to carry this momentum into the current tour, which also features a three-match ODI and Test series.

West Indies’ squad has been strengthened with the inclusion of fast bowler Matthew Forde, who has returned from a shoulder injury and was selected over Khary Pierre. Sherfane Rutherford, however, is unavailable due to illness.

Both teams are working to improve their preparations ahead of the T20 World Cup, just three months away. With clear conditions in Auckland, a high-scoring game is anticipated at Eden Park, known for its short boundaries. DRS will not be used in this match due to technical issues.

New Zealand team: 1 Tim Robinson, 2 Devon Conway (wk), 3 Rachin Ravindra, 4 Mark Chapman, 5 Daryl Mitchell, 6 Michael Bracewell, 7 James Neesham, 8 Mitchell Santner (captain), 9 Zakary Foulkes, 10 Kyle Jamieson, 11 Jacob Duffy

West Indies team: 1 Shai Hope (captain, wk), 2 Alick Athanaze, 3 Brandon King, 4 Roston Chase, 5 Ackeem Auguste, 6 Rovman Powell, 7 Jason Holder, 8 Romario Shepherd, 9 Matthew Forde, 10 Akeal Hosein, 11 Jayden Seales
